Assisting Social Conversation between Persons with Alzheimer's Disease and their Conversational Partners

چکیده
The number of people with dementia of the Alzheimer's type (DAT) continues to grow. One of the significant impacts of this disease is a decline in the ability to communicate using natural language. This decline in language facility often results in decreased social interaction and life satisfaction for persons with DAT and their caregivers. One possible strategy to lessen the effects of this loss of language facility is for the unaffected conversational partner (Facilitator) to "co-construct" short autobiographical stories from the life of the DATaffected conversational partner (Storyteller). It has been observed that a skilled conversational partner can facilitate co-constructed narrative with individuals who have mild to moderate DAT. Developing a computational model of this type of co-constructed narrative would enable assistive technology to be developed that can monitor a conversation between a Storyteller and Facilitator. This technology could provide context-sensitive suggestions to an unskilled Facilitator to help maintain the flow of conversation. This paper describes a framework in which the necessary computational model of co-constructed narrative can be developed. An analysis of the fundamental elements of such a model will be

An Assistive Conversation Skills Training System for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer’s Disease
We describe research in progress on a dialogue system that simulates social conversation between animated characters representing a person with Alzheimer's Disease and his caregiver. The goal of the research is to enable caregivers to practice techniques to improve their assistive conversational skills. These skills are expected to reduce caregiver stress and to improve the quality of life of p...
متن کاملDialogue Generation in an Assistive Conversation Skills Training System for Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer's Disease
We describe a proposed assistive conversational skills training system using artificial intelligence and natural language generation techniques to simulate spoken dialogue between two embodied agents, one character representing a caregiver and the other character a person with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). The type of dialogue simulated is social conversation in which the caregiver encourages the p...
متن کاملA Virtual World for Coaching Caregivers of Persons with Alzheimer's Disease
We present the design of a system for coaching caregivers on techniques for having social conversations with persons with Alzheimer's Disease (AD). Through an avatar in a virtual world, the caregiver practices interventions by eliciting autobiographical stories from a virtual character. Our system extends previous AI research in interactive drama and conversational agents in two areas: generati...
متن کاملFirst-Encounter Talks between Younger and Older Adults in Taiwan: A Conversation Analysis Approach
Outside of Western contexts, natural-conversation-based research on intergenerational communication is relatively rare. To help redress this imbalance, this paper explores the conversational styles of first-encounter talks between five pairs of college students and older adults in Taiwan, and infers the interactional norms that underlie them. It is found that younger Taiwanese adults tend to ex...
متن کاملContrastive conversational analysis of language production by Alzheimer's and control people
Alzheimer's disease is characterized by memory disorders, although it affects also other cognitive functions (executive functions, attention, gnosia, praxia and language) and the communication ability. Our objective is to study verbal communication of people affected by the Alzheimer's disease at early to moderate stages. One particularity of our approach is that we are working in ecological co...
